Democrats Confuse Joe, Eugene McCarthy
MELISSA BLOCK, Host:
One final convention note. We can only imagine the red faces in Denver last night during the video tribute to Democratic luminaries who have died since the 2004 convention. There was the late congresswoman from New York, Shirley Chisholm, Lady Bird Johnson, on and on, and then, there in huge letters on the screen, was the name Joseph McCarthy; that's right, the former Republican senator from Wisconsin who became famous in the 1950s for his anti-communist witch hunts and died more than 50 years ago. It seems the DNC got its McCarthys mixed up.
The photo beside the name belonged to the proper McCarthy, Eugene McCarthy, middle name Joseph. The famously liberal congressman, then senator from Minnesota and would-be presidential nominee, died in 2005. We've asked the DNC for an explanation of what went wrong last night. No word yet.
