(Soundbite of theme song from “Father Knows Best”)
STEVE INSKEEP, host:
One of TV's favorite moms has died. Jane Wyatt worked for 60 years in television and film, and she played Margaret Anderson on the popular ‘50s sitcom Father Knows Best. Afterwards, she remembered the role of housewife as somewhat limiting, at least as it was played on TV. Even when the episode was about some other character, she said, she had to stay on the set to deliver such lines as eat your dinner, dear, or how did you do in school today? After awhile she said it was difficult to have to face the same people day after day.
TV viewers never tired of facing her, though, and in real life she was a mother to two sons. They will gather for a funeral Friday to remember their mom, Jane Wyatt, who died of natural causes at the age of 96.
