This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I'm Scott Simon.

Starting this week, you can perfect your backstroke while looking at the Statue of Liberty - not just by falling off the Staten Island Ferry. The floating pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park Beach will open July 4th on a barge moored between Piers Four and Five along the Brooklyn Waterfront. The pool will have seven long lanes that can accommodate 175 swimmers, seven days a week.

A nearby parking lot will be lined with sand brought in from nearby Red Hook to create an impromptu beach along the industrial waterfront. There will be a spray pool for children and murals along the piers that according to pre-opening publicity will depict the history of marine life on the New York waterfront. Does that include exhibitionists?

Coming up from the sands of Red Hook to "Hooked," a new novel about the addictions of the Internet age.
