MELISSA BLOCK, Host:
One other note about the Obama administration, it's the day after the president's 50th birthday and we feel a bit duped. We reported yesterday that president Obama would celebrate that milestone in a relatively subdued fashion. And here's why, listen to Press Secretary Jay Carney's blasé description yesterday of the planned festivities.
JAY CARNEY: There will be a birthday gathering with friends and family this evening.
BLOCK: Friends like, as we now know, Chris Rock, Tom Hanks, Jay-Z, Whoopi Goldberg, Gayle King, Charles Barkley - oh, and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, all serenaded by Stevie Wonder. The guests chowed down on hamburgers, ribs and hot dogs. And that yes, there was cake and pie. Remember, we said the president likes pie: Apple, peach, cherry and huckleberry. The Obama family picked up the bill.
BLOCK: Just left the president's birthday party at the White House. Herbie Hancock played, Stevie Wonder sang and, yes, they did the electric slide. A great night.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ELECTRIC SLIDE")
NEVILLE LIVINGSTON: (Singing) You can see it. It's electric. You got to feel it...
BLOCK: You're listening to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News.
