LIANE HANSEN, host:
From NPR News, this is WEEKEND EDITION. I'm Liane Hansen. And there were some of the voices in the news this past week.
Unidentified Man#1: There was no one in the decade or two before Pavarotti came along who captured the public imagination to the degree he did. He really was a phenomenon unto himself.
Mr. LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (Opera Singer): I try to keep away from cold weather and heavy(ph) food, spicy food. Well, the voice doesn't need much more than take very good care to the body.
SUSAN STAMBERG: I love how you call your voice her.
Mr. PAVAROTTI: Oh, she's a person. She's a lady who make me straight.
(Soundbite of laughter)
Mr. PAVAROTTI: She puts me under her dominion.
Unidentified Man#2: From what is happening more broadly is perhaps some of the uncertainty in financial market - the volatility in financial market that we've seen over the last month or so, it could've cost employers to really cut back the pace of their hiring.
Unidentified Man#3: We've seen tapes like these before from Bin Laden, from (unintelligible) and from others. The bottom line is all that does is reinforce the need for all of us to take concrete action, to fight extremism and to fight terrorism.
President GEORGE W. BUSH: The Iraqi government had met three, partially met four and did not meet 11 of the 18 benchmarks. Overall, key legislation has not been passed, violence remains high, and it is unclear whether the Iraqi government will spend the $10 billion in reconstruction funds it has allocated.
General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker tell me, if the kind of success we are now seeing continues, it would be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces.
