In the battle to conserve water in the West, golf is often seen as one of the bad guys. As the drought gets worse, watering acres of grass for fun gets less and less attractive. But in the state of California, golf is a $6 billion industry that employs well over 100,000 people. In other words, golf isn't going anywhere. But some golf courses are trying to figure out how to save every drop of water they possibly can. Here's NPR's Sonari Glinton.

SONARI GLINTON, BYLINE: This is a golf course story, so we need to talk to a golf pro, and I got one for us. Stephen Friedlander is vice president of golf at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, Calif. Like many California golf pros, he's a bit sensitive about water.

STEPHEN FRIEDLANDER: When people say, well, that golf course is watering their grass, if they're talking about Pelican Hill, yes we are, we're using reclaimed water. And we're using reclaimed water in a very specific, measured way.

GLINTON: Now, lots of golf courses use recycled or reclaimed water, but Pelican Hill is a bit different. Friedlander gave me a tour to show me how.

FRIEDLANDER: Right now we're at the practice facility at Pelican Hill Golf Club. We're looking at a large - about 10 acres' worth of land that's mostly warm season Bermuda grass.

GLINTON: That grass was chosen because it needs less water and doesn't grow as quickly. In the non-playing areas, they use native bushes. But this swanky course doesn't look starved for water at all. And at more than $300 for a round, Friedlander says most golfers won't notice any difference in the greens or the fairways. The key is the irrigation system. Course managers can monitor and control irrigation from their smartphones, directing the force, even the direction of each sprinkler head.

FRIEDLANDER: You can water specific areas of the golf course without watering other specific areas. We can isolate each head, so instead of turning on 50 heads and overwatering an area that doesn't need water, we can turn on one head and water one area that might need water.

GLINTON: Pelican Hill says it saves 50 million gallons of water each year - recycled water, mind you. There is something else that makes Pelican Hill special - rainwater.

SAT TAMARIBUCHI: We want to capture every bit of rainfall we can. Well, one, it's cheaper; two, it's a very high-quality water.

GLINTON: That's Sat Tamaribuchi. He helped design the course's conservation system. Any rain that falls in the buildings, pavement, cart paths goes into one of the courses reservoirs, which form the major water features on the course. And underground, there are giant cisterns that hold millions of gallons of runoff water from the course.

TAMARIBUCHI: As it turns out, because our cistern system and the lake systems are so large, ever since the work was done, no storm water has left the golf course, essentially.

GLINTON: Stephen Friedlander, the golf pro, admits that a golf course in a wealthy town like Newport Coast, Calif., has a real incentive to save water. But he says it's not just a California problem.

FRIEDLANDER: So if you're in the golf industry and you're not a water quality and a management person, then what are you doing?

GLINTON: Friedlander says golfers shouldn't have to feel bad about hitting a few balls - or at least trying to hit a few balls.
