RENEE MONTAGNE, host:
In Gleneagles, Scotland, Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George Bush both learned of the attacks at the G8 Summit. The prime minister returned to London by helicopter after making this statement about the presumed terrorists who caused the attack.
Prime Minister TONY BLAIR: Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world.
MONTAGNE: President Bush consulted with national security and homeland security officials, the Department of Homeland Security which then raised the terrorist threat level for mass transit in the United States. The president also said this to reporters.
President GEORGE W. BUSH: We will not yield to these people. We will not yield to the terrorists. We will find them, we'll bring them to justice and at the same time we will spread an ideology of hope and compassion that will overwhelm their ideology of hate.
MONTAGNE: President Bush earlier today in Gleneagles, Scotland.
