OPHIRA EISENBERG, HOST:

Let's meet our next two contestants. Mandy Kilinkis, you are a content and social media manager at a company that sells swag.

MANDY KILINKIS: Correct.

EISENBERG: And you're a collector.

KILINKIS: I am a collector.

EISENBERG: Now, is being a collector a sickness?

KILINKIS: It is, actually.

EISENBERG: Oh, really, OK.

KILINKIS: It's also genetic because both my mother, my aunt and my grandmother are all collectors as well.

EISENBERG: Really?

KILINKIS: I couldn't avoid it.

EISENBERG: And, Nick Poluha, how are you doing?

NICK POLUHA: Pretty good.

EISENBERG: You are an architect.

POLUHA: Yes, I am.

EISENBERG: Now, is being an architect a sickness?

(LAUGHTER)

POLUHA: Yeah, it usually ends up with no sleep.

EISENBERG: Really?

POLUHA: Yeah.

EISENBERG: It's around-the-clock stressful?

POLUHA: Pretty much.

EISENBERG: Nick, what would your supervillain name be?

POLUHA: I would be the punisher but with a hyphen between the word pun and the rest of it.

(LAUGHTER, APPLAUSE)

EISENBERG: Brilliant, brilliant.

(APPLAUSE)

EISENBERG: I know all the reasons why you're on this show.

POLUHA: Yeah.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: Mandy, how about you? What would your supervillain name be?

KILINKIS: It would be Lady Cerulean because I look good in blue, and with lady, I either have money or a title or both, so....

EISENBERG: Nice.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: And maybe all of it. Well, it is time to play one of our favorite games called This, That Or The Other. So what we do is we give you a title and you just have to tell us which of three categories it belongs to. So we're going to go to Jonathan Coulton to let us know, what are our contestants going to be guessing about?

JONATHAN COULTON: Well, today's categories are famous racehorses, roller coasters and comic book supervillains.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: So buzz in to guess, and if you're wrong, your opponent can steal. And the winner will move on to the final round at the end of the show. You ready?

POLUHA: Yes.

KILINKIS: Sure.

COULTON: Let's do it. Whiplash.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Mandy?

KILINKIS: Roller coaster.

COULTON: That's a good guess, but it is not a roller coaster. Nick, do you want to take a guess?

POLUHA: Supervillain.

COULTON: You're right, it is a villain. That's correct.

(APPLAUSE)

COULTON: From "Iron Man 2," the guy with the crazy electricity whip. Kentucky Rumbler.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Nick.

POLUHA: Roller coaster.

COULTON: Yeah. That was a fast answer, yes.

(APPLAUSE)

COULTON: Have you - have you ridden, or do you know about the Kentucky Rumbler?

POLUHA: No, I guessed.

COULTON: You just guessed.

EISENBERG: Nice.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: You guessed very confidently. I felt certain that you had actually ridden that coaster. Thunder Gulch.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Nick.

POLUHA: Racehorse?

COULTON: Yeah, it's a racehorse.

(APPLAUSE)

COULTON: I'm going to ask you again, due to the confidence of your answer....

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Are you familiar with the racehorse Thunder Gulch, or was that just a guess?

POLUHA: Total guess.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: I don't know what makes you so confident, Nick. You're right, the - won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont in 1995. You didn't know that, did you?

POLUHA: Nope.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Abomination.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Mandy.

KILINKIS: Supervillain.

COULTON: Yes, it is a supervillain.

(APPLAUSE)

EISENBERG: It's a cruel name for a horse.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Millennium Force.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Mandy.

KILINKIS: Roller coaster.

COULTON: Yeah, it is a roller coaster.

(APPLAUSE)

KILINKIS: I have ridden that one.

COULTON: You have?

KILINKIS: I have.

COULTON: It says here on this piece of paper in front of me, it was the world's first giga coaster, which means it has a drop of between 300 and 400 feet.

KILINKIS: Yeah, it was fun.

EISENBERG: That sounds terrifying.

COULTON: Kingda Ka.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Nick.

POLUHA: Supervillain.

COULTON: No, I'm sorry, Mr. Confidence. That's incorrect.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Mandy, do you want to take a guess?

KILINKIS: Yeah, racehorse?

COULTON: No, I'm sorry. It is a roller coaster - Six Flags in New Jersey. Intimidator.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Nick.

POLUHA: Racehorse?

COULTON: No. Nick, what happened to you, man?

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Falling apart.

POLUHA: The confidence was all a lie.

COULTON: I know, I guess. Mandy, do you know the answer?

KILINKIS: Roller coaster?

COULTON: It is a roller coaster, you're right.

(APPLAUSE)

EISENBERG: Should be a villain, though.

COULTON: Whirlaway.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Nick.

POLUHA: Racehorse.

COULTON: Yes, racehorse. Nick, you're back. Triple Crown in 1941, Whirlaway. This is a funny story about Whirlaway. Apparently, he was - he was known for his psychoses.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: His trainer said that he was the dumbest horse he ever trained.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: That's why that name did not live on, I guess. How is a racehorse dumb, like, he's running, like, the other way or something?

COULTON: I don't know.

ART CHUNG: He won the Triple Crown. What more does he need to do?

COULTON: Yeah, how dumb can he be? This is your last clue. Assault.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

COULTON: Mandy.

KILINKIS: Roller coaster.

COULTON: No, I'm sorry.

EISENBERG: It should be, though.

COULTON: It sounds like an awesome roller coaster.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Nick, do you want to take a guess?

POLUHA: Racehorse?

COULTON: It is a racehorse. You are right.

(APPLAUSE)

COULTON: Triple Crown in 1946. A lot of these horses won Triple Crowns. Good for them.

(LAUGHTER)

COULTON: Art Chung, how did our contestants do?

CHUNG: It was a roller coaster of a game, but congratulations to Nick. We will see you in our final round at the end of the show.

(APPLAUSE)

KILINKIS: All right, well done.

(SOUNBITE OF MUSIC)

EISENBERG: Coming up, Lucasfilm's digital communications manager, Andi Gutierrez, will join us for Meet The Expert. And I'll ask her how I can get Kylo Ren to stop texting me his dark side. I'm Ophira Eisenberg, and you're listening to ASK ME ANOTHER from NPR.
