STEVE INSKEEP, host:
Another meat packaging label is on its way to your grocery store. So today's last word on business can be found on the package of chicken.
Here are some of the labels you might see on pork chops or chicken breasts: cage free, free farmed and certified humane. Those labels indicate that the animal was raised in a humane environment. The newest label is going to be animal compassionate. You'll see it at Whole Foods stores in the next few months. People who grow the animals have to meet certain requirements to get the labels.
To get the animal compassionate label, farmers have to follow certain rules, like the one that allows the use of electric prods, but only in emergencies.
And this is MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep.
