DAVID GREENE, HOST:

All right. Step aside, Lil Nas X - Billie Eilish has replaced her fellow Gen Z-er at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BAD GUY")

BILLIE EILISH: I'm the bad guy, duh.

NOEL KING, HOST:

This week, Eilish's song "Bad Guy" ended "Old Town Road's" record-breaking 19-week streak at No. 1. Billie Eilish is 17 years old, and that makes her the first artist born in this century to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 charts.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BAD GUY")

EILISH: (Singing) My mommy likes to sing along with me, but she won't sing this song. If she reads all the lyrics, she'll pity the men I know. So you're a tough guy...

GREENE: She wrote "Bad Guy" with her brother and producer, Finneas O'Connell. Her debut album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" was recorded at home

KING: And Eilish recently talked to NPR about how she gets that really distinct sound.

(SOUNDBITE OF ACHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

EILISH: I don't know. I don't think I really tried hard to have my sound, so I think that's why it happened. I think when you don't try super hard, things just tend to (laughter) happen faster.

FINNEAS O'CONNELL: I would say this, though...

GREENE: As for the speed of "Bad Guy's" rise on the charts, both that song and "Old Town Road" have benefited from multiple popular remixes. Billboard counts remixes and original releases together to figure out the charts. Being a good guy, Lil Nas X congratulated Eilish on Twitter, telling her, you deserve this.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "OLD TOWN ROAD (REMIX)")

BILLY RAY CYRUS: (Singing) Ride until I can't no more. I'm going to take my horse to the old town road. I'm going to ride until I can't no more.

LIL NAS X: (Singing) I got the horses in the back. Horse tack is attached. Hat is matte black, got the boots that's black to match. Riding on a horse. Ha, you can whip your Porsche...
