These Women Built Careers In Retail. The COVID-19 Crisis Tore Through Their Stores

Retail - it is the most common job in America. And it is women who hold the majority of jobs in clothing and department stores, gift and souvenir shops. They run cash registers everywhere. The pandemic recession has pushed more women than men out of the workforce. And in retail, some of their jobs are at risk of disappearing forever. NPR's Alina Selyukh reports.

ALINA SELYUKH, BYLINE: Even to Diana Newcomb herself, one of her first jobs in retail back in the '70s now sounds bonkers. She tallied, by hand, stubs from sales tags.

DIANA NEWCOMB: We would jump out of stubs, count them and mark in the books, you know, five pairs of boys size 6 Levi's sold.

SELYUKH: Newcomb was in her 20s, excited for this job at a department store in Rhode Island however little it paid.

NEWCOMB: I was renting a garage apartment and living off of canned vegetables and Triscuits. But, you know, I thought I was being independent. I was at that point.

SELYUKH: Newcomb is one of millions of women who have built careers stitching together work like this. About a fifth of women in retail tend to be 55 and older. The pandemic recession tore through their stores. Thousands have shuttered. Major chains have gone bankrupt, storied ones - Neiman Marcus, Brooks Brothers, Lord & Taylor. Almost 400,000 jobs have yet to recover. Newcomb's was one of them.

NEWCOMB: This is one of those times in life that you just don't see coming.

SELYUKH: Newcome has faced several personal emergencies on top of the pandemic. She's currently fighting breast cancer. She's now 67. Over the years, she's worked what she calls odd jobs, ran a salvage shop with her husband in Oregon, got an interior design degree, but time and again came back to retail - a furniture store, then J.C. Penney. And then in her 60s, she and her husband separated.

NEWCOMB: I'm trying to reestablish myself on my own. I was sort of one of those people at a loss for what to do, and what I know I can do is people in retail.

SELYUKH: Newcomb got an apartment with her daughter, dug out a nice scarf from her closet, pinned it around her neck and walked to Macy's at a nearby outdoor mall. She got hired for the holidays and stayed, soon promoted to handbag specialist.

NEWCOMB: Big, old fancy department stores are kind of fun, although I've always thought the whole time I worked there that they were not changing fast enough with the times (laughter).

SELYUKH: She had watched the industry balloon - malls sprawling across the suburbs, more real estate devoted to retail here than anywhere else in the world. Then it boomeranged, online shopping convenience slowly outshining the appeal of sliding hangers across a physical rack. The pandemic clicked fast-forward, forcing stores to confront their weaknesses.

NEWCOMB: And they closed the store for two weeks. And then they furloughed us, and I was not one of the people hired back.

SELYUKH: It's unnerving to feel like you're suddenly not needed, but Newcomb kept thinking it wasn't just her. In Texas, Heather Wilcox-Nicholls was telling herself the exact same thing. She'd been with Mattress Firm for about five years when the pandemic started, taking on a new store as a manager.

HEATHER WILCOX-NICHOLLS: I was really excited about it. I mean, I had purchased paint brushes to fix some dings, a little coffee bar to set up.

SELYUKH: Within days, she was asked to take a voluntary furlough. Then stores closed. Soon she found herself jobless.

WILCOX-NICHOLLS: At first I was really ashamed. I wanted to hide because, like, this is my life's work. I am a professional mattress salesperson, and I'm really, really good at it.

SELYUKH: This had been an accidental career, though a solid one. In her 20s with a new baby but without a high school diploma, she wandered down the main street of her town, resume in hand, hired by a mattress store.

WILCOX-NICHOLLS: And that was when I could afford to buy my first car and live in a place where everybody got their own bedroom. I loved the job.

SELYUKH: But over time, Wilcox-Nicholls wondered how sustainable a retail life really was. She filled time between customers studying for her GED. In her 30s, she got into community college, now 46, chipping away at a bachelor's in physics, hoping one day to work in a lab. She told her son, in retail, you can get lucky for a time, but it's not a career anymore.

WILCOX-NICHOLLS: I want him to have hard-skill knowledge that can never be taken away and will always demand a fair wage.

SELYUKH: After losing her mattress sales job, Wilcox-Nicholls actually found a new one at a furniture store. But her elderly mother had an accident, a side effect of not getting in-person assistance visits during the pandemic.

WILCOX-NICHOLLS: She can't be alone before she finds another living situation, so here I am.

SELYUKH: Being with her mom meant she missed too many work days at the furniture store to get through the probationary period. She left on good terms, planning to try again when she can. But the first financial order of business - figuring out how to pay rent.
